To determine the profile, a colour measurement chart (also known as a test chart) is first printed out with various defined colour values taken from a reference file. These are then illuminated and read in by a spectrophotometer, the most important colour measuring device in colour management.1 After that, the reference colour values are compared to the spectrophotometer measurement to determine how linear or non-linear the colours are mapped in the reproduction, can document tone value increase or decrease, and respond accurately within the colour space.
