(Flat) files without layers

The final artwork should be the latest point at which only layout elements on the same layer are in the PDF. To create a file, it is recommended to create a separate layer for each colour separation, in which only those layout elements are placed that are actually being reproduced in the respective colour. In the final artwork, it can be reviewed if all data is in the right layers. The individual pages of the layout can then be stored relatively quickly as separate PDF copies. Within InDesign or Illustrator, in the layer options of each layer, the boxes Show Layer and Print Layer should be checked so they are both visible and printed, i.e. displayed in the PDF. PDF files can also be scaled down and optimised in Adobe Acrobat. Since this step cannot be undone, creating a backup copy is recommended:

Make a backup copy of the PDF file

Open the file and under the [Advanced] tab, select the option [Optimise PDF]

Click on the menu item Discard User Data and select [Discard Private Data Of Other Applications] as well as [Discard Hidden Layer Content]

Select the menu item Clean Up and confirm with OK

Now save the optimised file using a new filename

Select the layer menu [View > Navigation panes > Layers]

Select the options menu and select Merge Layers or Flatten Layers

Save the file and print it

Open the file and under File > Save as, select Optimized PDF

Click on the menu item [Discard User Data] and select [Discard Private Data Of Other Applications] as well as [Discard Hidden Layer Content]

Save the optimised file using a new name

Select the layer menu [View > Show / Hide > Navigation pane > Layers]
